LOVE will take centre stage in Geelong this Valentine’s Day, with a romantic milonga celebrating friendship, family and connection.

Local tango instructor Pam Jarvis said the idea began when one of her students wanted to surprise his mother with a tango during her visit from Uruguay – a happy coincidence that fell on Valentine’s week.

“We decided we’d have a romantic milonga for Valentine’s Day – but not a boy-girl, couple-only Valentine’s,” Ms Jarvis said. “It’s about love in all its forms: friendship, family, and fond memories.”

When a nearby church hall became available, the group decided to create something “beautiful and different” for the night.

To set the scene, the adjoining church will open half an hour earlier, filled with flowers and organ music for quiet reflection.

“From the church, people can just stroll across the car park to the hall… from stillness to celebration,” Ms Jarvis said.

The evening will be full of warmth, music and community connection.

“We’ll have tables with candles and flowers, and our dancers will bring plates for supper… it’s all very personal and community-driven,” Ms Jarvis said.

Adding a touch of vintage flair, the project The Secret Life of Dresses will feature gowns dating back to the 1920s.

“Every dress has a story… none of them were ever just garments,” Ms Jarvis said. “They’ve been lent by women in our group… daughters, granddaughters, friends… all with histories of love and celebration.”

The dresses will be displayed in the hall before being brought to life on the dance floor by a group of performers later in the evening.

For Ms Jarvis, tango is about connection and inclusivity.

“Tango belongs to everyone… it’s a social dance, not a competition. If you can walk, you can dance; and if you can’t, you can still feel the rhythm,” she said. “We wanted an event that says love is still alive and well in Geelong… just in a gentler, more joyful way.”

The dance will be held at Christ Church Geelong tomorrow (Saturday, February 14) at 7.30pm.
