DEVELOPERS have lodged plans for a 73-apartment high-rise project on the shores of Geelong’s Western Beach.

Kavellaris Urban Design (KUD) has revealed its proposal for the new “premium residential address” at a property spanning 5-11 Mercer Street and 2-6 Ginn Street.

The project would create a mixed-use residential and retail project, which proponents say would “re-invigorate” surrounding streets.

KUD has submitted the plan to the state government’s planning minister for consideration, with further details on advertising to come.

The developer states its design aims to make an “architectural statement” while paying homage to the nearby Corio Bay and Geelong’s industrial heritage.

“The team were inspired by the project’s close position to Western Beach, as well as its proximity to Geelong station and the heart of the CBD, to explore how we could create a development that would foster sustainable high rise living.

“Kavellaris Urban Design used this project to recalibrate the traditional apartment model for a regional centre like Geelong.

“Our aim was to provide increased amenity and space to residents whilst stepping back from the low rise double story residential homes along Western Beach Road.”

Sustainable design elements would also be incorporated, including through EV charging, solar panels, water tanks and double glazing – resulting in a carbon-neutral project and a 71 per cent BESS (Built Environment Sustainability Scorecard).

The relevant property falls within the Station Precinct of the recently approved Central Geelong Framework Plan, which aims to create “a high-density, mixed-use gateway to the city”.
