January 2, 2019 BY

FORMER AFL player and Melbourne coach Mark Neeld has been appointed as the new chief executive officer of Basketball Geelong.

The Basketball Geelong Commission announced its decision at the organisation’s annual general meeting last month.

The commission says Mr Neeld has extensive experience in both business and the high performance sports industry, and brings a level of strategic thinking that will take Basketball Geelong to new heights.

After completing a Masters of Business Administration, Mr Neeld has been lecturing in business management at La Trobe University.

His previous employment experience includes change management, facility management and development and leadership.

“I am thrilled to be joining Basketball Geelong at such an exciting time for the sport in the region,” he said.

“Basketball Geelong and the Geelong Supercats are a strong brand in the community and have built a solid foundation, particularly with the AWA Alliance Bank Stadium in Belmont. There are some exciting opportunities for the future of the association.

“I look forward to working with the staff team, the Commission, the clubs and all stakeholders to continue to grow and promote basketball participation.”

Mr Neeld has strong family ties to the Geelong community and will begin in the role of chief executive officer later this month.

“To have a leader of Mark’s calibre available and interested in the position has been a real coup for us,” Basketball Geelong chair Sebastian Loader said.

“The Commission went through an exhaustive process to ensure we selected the right candidate, and we feel that Mark’s skills, experience and leadership capabilities will be a great asset to Basketball Geelong as we move into the future.”
