RSL sub-branches across the nation will host Anzac Day ceremonies on Friday, April 25 as communities pause to remember the sacrifices made during war.
There will be multiple services held across the region, including five from the Geelong RSL Sub-Branch.
Their services will begin at 4.15am with a Pre-Dawn service at Johnstone Park, followed by the Dawn Service at Eastern Beach at 6am and a 6.30am service at the Boer War Memorial in Kilgour Street.
The Geelong RSL will host a gunfire breakfast from 7.30am before the 9am wreath laying at the Geelong RSL Cenotaph.
Stepping off at 11am from Geelong’s Malop street, the march will make its way to Johnstone Park for the main service at 11.30am.
Geelong RSL Sub-branch president Mark Lee said heading into Anzac Day was a busy time but also a very important time.
“For me it’s a very important moment to bring to the attention of the public the challenges and sacrifice of the veterans, both former and current.
“It’s all about remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice and the important role of our Australian Defence Force in protecting our country.”
Mr Lee said the turnout for Anzac Day events is as strong as it’s ever been, with veterans who have passed being represented by family members marching in their place and new and emerging groups starting to come through.
“It’s lovely when we see the public come out, lining Malop Street, cheering on all the veterans and it’s a wonderful sight to see.
“A lot of veterans are doing it hard throughout the year and it’s that one day of the year they can stand a little bit taller and prouder.”
Mr Lee asked people if they see a veteran, ensure they thank them for their service.
Also in Geelong, the Lara RSL Sub-branch will host a dawn service at 6am at the RSL, followed by a gunfire breakfast.
The Sub-Branch invites the community to a barbecue at 12.30pm as they celebrate the spirit of community and togetherness.
In Norlane, there will be a church service at 6am and a gunfire breakfast from 7am before the march.
The march will make its way from the corner of Melbourne and Sparks Road, gathering at 9.20am and arriving at the Sub-Branch for a service.
