GEELONG Marlins Water Polo Club is searching for its next wave of junior Marlins at its Come and Try Day on July 30.

Marlins president Bec Talbot said the club’s Come and Try Day session at Christian College pool in Waurn Ponds at the end of this month was a great opportunity for children aged between 8-17 to try out a new sport.

“The session is for complete beginners, so no experience is necessary, and we encourage everyone attending to bring a friend too,” Ms Talbot said.

“As long as children know how to competently swim in the water, this day is for anyone eager to break into water polo.

“We’ll have expert coaches on hand to provide useful tips and explain the basic rules of the sport.”

The session will feature two one-hour sessions for two separate age categories.

The first hour (1.30pm-2.30pm) will involve Mixed 12s and Under 14s Boys and Girls.

The second hour (2.30pm-3.30pm) will be catered towards the Under 16s and older age brackets.

Ms Talbot said the club currently has 75 Marlins in total but is eager to increase that number into 2024.

The Geelong Marlins compete weekly over the summer months and take part in Ballarat’s yearly tournament held in September this year at the start the water polo season.

Geelong Marlins also host the largest junior water polo tournament in the state at the Tri-State Championships in February at Kardinia Park.

The tournament welcomes clubs from New South Wales, Tasmania and the ACT to compete in the event.

“We’re a big family club at Geelong Marlins, it’s a real community-based sport,” Ms Talbot said.

“We’re very equal in terms of male and female splits at the moment, and inclusive of all abilities as well.

“We welcome new families from all over the region and we’d love to see them at our Come and Try Day.”
