A NEW partnership between the City of Greater Geelong and Geelong United Basketball (GUB) is expected to advance women’s sport across the region and help inspire the next generation of basketball stars.

The partnership, which extends to 2027, is being billed as a “landmark collaboration” between the two entities, that will see a significant investment in GUB’s Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) program, which is currently in its inaugural season.

Aimed at “elevating women’s basketball to new heights”, the partnership will reduce GUB’s costs, help to deliver WNBL games at the Geelong Arena, and support greater female participation in sport, from grassroots to elite levels.

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the collaboration would significantly enhance the visibility of Geelong United as a brand.

“As our region’s largest indoor sport venue, Geelong Arena will continue to be the home of basketball, and we can’t wait to watch the athleticism and determination of our first WNBL team at the elite level there.

“I urge the broader community to show their support and get behind Geelong United.”

At the centre of the partnership is a commitment to community engagement, with both the city and GUB planning to roll out a series of initiatives that will connect the WNBL team with local schools, junior athletes and community groups.

These initiatives will ensure these youngsters have access to inspirational role models that encourage them to get involved in local sport and increase their physical activity.

GUB chief executive officer Mark Neeld said the partnership was a “pivotal moment” for the organisation.

“It demonstrates the city’s belief in the power of basketball to bring people together and create lasting positive impacts in our community,” he said.

“We’re proud to represent Geelong on the national stage and look forward to what we can achieve together.”
