LOCAL pet owners are being encouraged to help their dogs adjust to post-holiday routines to prevent behavioural issues such as separation anxiety and boredom.

Pet Insurance Australia spokesperson Nadia Crighton said the return to work and school can be challenging for pets who have grown accustomed to having their owners around.

“After spending extended periods with their families over the holidays, dogs can experience separation anxiety or boredom when routines shift,” she said.

“These changes can lead to undesirable behaviours such as excessive barking, chewing, or other destructive activities.”

To ease the transition, Crighton recommends gradually reintroducing routines, ensuring dogs have a safe space, and incorporating daily exercise.

She said adjusting a dog’s schedule before returning to work or school can help.

“Start adjusting your dog’s daily schedule a few days before work or school begins. This includes feeding, walking, and playtime at the hours you’ll maintain post-holidays.”

Providing a comfortable and secure environment is also important.

“Ensure your dog has access to their favourite toys, a cosy bed, and fresh water,” she said.

“Consider interactive toys or puzzle feeders to keep them mentally engaged.”

Daily exercise can help alleviate stress and excess energy.

“A tired dog is a happy dog,” Crighton said.

“Morning walks or play sessions can help expend energy and reduce stress while you’re away.”

Crighton also suggests practicing short periods of absence before work routines resume to help dogs adjust.

“Spend short periods away from your dog in the days leading up to your return to work,” she said.

“This helps them adjust gradually and understand you’ll come back.”
