A ONE-DAY event aimed at celebrating positive ageing and taking on elder abuse will take place later this month in East Geelong.

The Changing Mind & Positive Ageing Expo, jointly hosted by the Barwon Elder Abuse Primary Prevention (BEAPP) Network and the Dementia Agency Network Geelong (DANG), will provide the community with an exciting and inclusive free event aimed at celebrating positive ageing.

“Social isolation is a significant issue affecting older people in the Greater Geelong region, with local data revealing nearly 20 per cent of households in the Portarlington region are older people living alone,” Barwon Community Legal Service CEO Bryanna Connell said.

“Strong social connections and access to community services are crucial in preventing elder abuse, as they address key factors like isolation and lack of support.

“Community events like this play a vital role in reducing social isolation, promoting inclusivity, and fostering the connections that help safeguard older people.”

The event will run in conjunction with the Victorian Seniors Festival, a month-long celebration of older Victorians.

It will include guest speakers and geriatricians Dr Alastair Mander and Lisa Mitchell, discussing the latest advancements in dementia research and perceptions of ageing.

BEAPP is led and convened by Barwon Community Legal Service and is one of 10 networks supported by the Victorian Government to combat elder abuse.

More than 20 stallholders are confirmed to attend the expo, providing information about healthy ageing, mental, physical, and social wellbeing.

The Changing Mind & Positive Ageing Expo is free to attend, however pre-registration is recommended.

The expo will be held at The Eastern Hub, East Geelong on October 24 from 11.30am to 2.30pm.
