THE National Wool Museum is again opening its doors to one of the world’s most prestigious photography events.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition returns to Geelong for its 60th anniversary, officially opening to the public today (December 20).

On loan from the National History Museum in London, the exhibition features the work of nature photographers capturing animal behaviours, species and diversity.

“We’re proud to continue our ongoing partnership with the Natural History Museum of London by bringing this amazing exhibition to our community and showcasing some of the most talented photographers in the world,” Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said.

“The exhibition is telling important stories about endangered species, environmental degradation and the conservation work being done to preserve habitat – all of which are incredibly important to our coastal community.”

Photographs were judged across a range of categories including animal portraits, natural artistry, under water, photojournalism and more.

Arriving in Geelong as part of an international tour, the award-winning images highlight stories and species around the world, encouraging a future of advocating for the planet.

Starting in 1965, the competition now features works from 117 countries and territories across the world.

It attracted more than 59,000 entrants this year.

National Wool Museum director Padraic Fisher will take visitors on a tour of the exhibition on February 1, where he will highlight his favourite images from this year’s finalists.

The exhibition will be on display at the museum until May 18, 2025.
