THE ROYAL Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) has announced its new general manager following an extensive search spanning four months.

The RGYC and commodore Roger Bennett welcomed Steve Harper to his new position following the retirement of Phil Clohesy after 13 years in the role.

“Roger brings a wealth of senior, operational management expertise to the role,” Mr Bennett said.

“With more than 30 years’ experience in related and relevant industries, we believe Steve’s skills and leadership will be invaluable.

“The Board is confident Steve can deliver a high level of excellence to the Club, which will be critical to our growth over coming years.”

Mr Harper’s appointment follows a comprehensive search which began in March.

Mr Harper’s career is lined with senior director roles at high profile and world class venues in Australia and internationally across sport, hospitality, and entertainment sectors.

He has also previously served as major events manager at the RGYC.

Mr Harper also served as event director of the Festival of Sails 180th anniversary earlier this year.

“I am thrilled to be taking on this new role at RGYC at a time when the future is looking really exciting for the club across our regular club activities, major events and the ongoing management of the marina and Wangim Walk,” Mr Harper said.

“I also wish Phil [Clohesy] a well-deserved retirement.”

Mr Harper officially began his new role as general manager on July 6.
