School Christmas Trees liven up Geelong CBD

ONE of the final Christmas projects in Geelong’s CBD for 2021 is complete thanks to the contributions of 31 different schools across the region.

Primary school students throughout the Geelong region have worked on 31 individually decorated Christmas trees that are displayed along Little Malop Central and in the forecourt at Johnstone Park.

“It’s fantastic that our local students get so involved during this exciting time of the year and they do an outstanding job decorating their trees,” Mayor Stephanie Asher said.

“Each tree has its own special design and character and is a demonstration of the creativity and artistic talent of the young people in our region.

“Children across our region have had a disruptive and challenging year with intermittent lockdowns separating them from their friends and having to adapt to remote learning.

“It’s fantastic that the kids could come together to work on these special Christmas trees that represent their schools.”

Schools across the region look forward to the festivities that Christmas brings, which is certainly the case for Geelong Lutheran College, which has one of the trees on display in the city.

“Our school loves being involved in the community and connected to the community,” Geelong Lutheran College’s Head of Primary Vicki Schilling said.

“We are always happy to spread some festive cheer throughout Geelong at Christmas time, that’s exactly why we love to get involved, just to be part of the community and contributing to that.”

Cr Asher said she hoped families from across the Greater Geelong region would make their way towards town and enjoy the School Christmas trees on display, while also taking advantage of all the Christmas attractions on offer across the region.

“With two-hour parking free in 2P zones in Central Geelong throughout December, we hope families will come in to see School Christmas Trees, the famous Floating Christmas Tree, and snap a photo on our Giant Selfie Trail,” she added.

Everyone can share in the festive spirit on social media by placing #GeelongChristmas in the captions of their social media posts.

The Johnstone Park forecourt is lined with Christmas trees decorated by local primary schoolers.
