LOCAL sports administrator Sean Atkinson has conquered his tallest challenge to date, reaching Mount Everest’s base camp to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s research.

The AFL Barwon operations manager has achieved a goal six months in the making, hiking up to the base camp after being diagnosed with the progressive illness in January last year at the age of 36.

“The trip was such a gruelling and emotional experience,” Mr Atkinson said.

“Every day brought a new challenge, things you would never have to face in everyday life back in Australian society.

“It was incredible to experience this with my three best mates, and I don’t think I would have gotten through it without them each day.

“Thank you for your support and generosity in being part of this, it’s impossible to express my full gratitude.”

Mr Atkinson raised more than $15,000 for the Shake It Up Foundation before the completion of his hike, smashing his original fundraising goal of $10,000.

All funds raised from Mr Atkinson will go directly to Parkinson’s research through the foundation.

“There are too many people I need to thank for their help personally, in getting me here,” he said.

“Thank you to everyone who has donated to my Shake It Up Australia fundraiser.

“It is unbelievable the support I have received for what now is a fight I share closely with them.

“Over $15,000 is quite overwhelming and so gratefully appreciated.

“This disease is never going away, and I will continue to be an advocate in trying to stop, slow or find a cure.”

Mr Atkinson also thanked his wife Rebecca and the rest of his family for their support throughout the initiative.
