A GEELONG-BASED cleaning service has largely covered the cost of making an 80-year-old man’s living situation substantially better.

WorkOK owner and Fyansford resident Greg Dale, and his supporters, threw in $5,200 to restore the hot water of an elderly Geelong gentleman, who has been living without a working water heating system for four years.

“Many of our clients are highly vulnerable, and too often, I come across a person like the gentleman I am working with now,” Mr Dale said.

“We find out about these elderly people living locally, who may be living on a pension, and they fall into these traps when something goes wrong in the house.

“To fix these issues, they try to take on a loan, and that’s where the trap gets worse once that starts coming out of their pension. That’s how this particular situation came about, and we’ve helped him out as a result.

“Financial difficulties only compound the issue. So, what happens when the hot water goes, the drains block up, the stove stops working, and a tree falls down in the yard? All of these things have happened with this client.”

WorkOK is a hoarding and squalor specialist cleaning service.

Mr Dale said the company had also received generous support from two service providers, who each paid $1,300 each to cover the service repair.

WorkOK has also put the word out to the community to help raise the remaining $2,600 to cover the lingering costs, of which $1,500 has already been donated.

“The restoration of hot water in the home will mean he can have hot showers, wash his hands, wash his dishes and clean his surfaces,” Mr Dale said.

“Every financial contribution helps restore his safety and dignity. I’ve already covered the remaining costs, so any additional donations helps me pay that off.

“At the end of the day though, the team and I always look forward to leading the repairs. We see the difference it makes and that’s why we do it.

“People should not be living like this in our day and age. We don’t care about how they got there, but there needs to be a means of providing support to elderly residents living in their own home.”
