Severe Weather Warning issued for Geelong and Melbourne

February 5, 2021 BY

The Bureau of Meterology issued the warning at 12.02pm.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Weather Warning for the Central Weather District, including Geelong, Ballarat, and the greater Melbourne area as of 2pm today (Friday, February 5).

The heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding and is expected to develop across central parts of the state today before slowly contracting to northeastern Victoria during the evening.

Six-hour totals of 20-40mm are possible across the warning area.

Locally higher falls and damaging wind gusts are possible with any thunderstorm activity.

Be aware of potential hazards caused by the severe weather. Conditions could affect school pickup and commuters heading home during peak periods due to flash flooding, falling trees, and reduced visibility, making road travel difficult.

Commuters should consider changing travel plans this afternoon as it is expected the severe weather will arrive between 2pm and 8pm in the Central Weather District.

People should stay informed by listening to emergency broadcasters and monitoring warnings on VicEmergency.

Phone Triple Zero (000) in a life-threatening emergency. For severe weather related emergency assistance from the SES, phone 132 500.
