A CEREMONIAL sod-turning has signified the start of works on the Chilwell Library redevelopment in Sladen Park.
City of Greater Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj joined Geelong MP Christine Couzens, the City’s chief executive officer Ali Wastie, and representatives from Geelong Regional Libraries and Chilwell Library Group to mark the milestone.
The $2.5 million project will transform the beloved library into a modern community hub while preserving its intimate, neighbourhood charm.
The revitalised site will feature flexible meeting rooms, a welcoming outdoor deck, improved amenities including public toilets, and stronger connections to the surrounding park.
Cr Kontelj said it was exciting to see construction getting underway.
“A great deal of thought and planning has gone into ensuring this upgrade is one that the whole community can enjoy,” he said.
“We look forward to welcoming the community back to a revitalised Chilwell Library next year.”
Ms Couzens said the modernisation would be a win for community access and inclusion.
“The Chilwell Library is a much-loved resource for the local community,” she said. “This redevelopment will provide the community with a modern, accessible library to be enjoyed into the future.”
Geelong Regional Libraries CEO Vanessa Schernickau said they couldn’t wait to welcome people through the doors of the new space.
“Public libraries are far more than bricks and books – they’re vital community hubs. Chilwell Library is the perfect example of that,” she said.
“We’re grateful to the City of Greater Geelong and the State Government for funding for this much-appreciated redevelopment.”
The upgraded facility is expected to reopen in mid-2026. For more information and project updates, head to geelongaustralia.com.au/clr.
