Telstra investigates Highton pole situation
HIGHTON Reserve may soon upgrade one of its light poles following a proposal from Telstra’s tower business at last week’s council meeting.
Amplitel, has put forward a submission to the City of Greater Geelong (CoGG) to have the 20-metre-high lighting tower removed at the north-west corner of the Barrabool Road reserve.
Currently serving as a transmitter for Vodafone as well as a standard lights tower, Amplitel is hoping to replace the current structure with 30-metre-high monopole, capable of co-locating Vodafone and Telstra transmitters.
The transmitter would provide greater Telstra coverage in the area and include equipment cabinets on the ground for the reserve’s use.
CoGG Councillor Belinda Moloney said if the proposal went ahead, the upgrade would provide improved telecommunications services and sports lighting for local residents, athletes and users of Highton Reserve.
“Council looks forward to hearing the insights from the community consultation and the outcomes of a Submissions Review Panel if it’s convened,” Cr Moloney said.
As part of the proposed 21-year lease, Amplitel would also supply and install AFL-standard sports lighting to the pole at the oval, home to the Geelong Falcons. AFL Victoria would be responsible for maintaining the sports lights.
Mayor Peter Murrihy invited the community to have a read of the proposal and view the maps of the preferred location of the monopole.
“If the city receives submissions and the submitter wants to be heard, a Submissions Review Panel would be held and report back to council,” Cr Murrihy said.
Council’s independent valuation of the proposal has determined that the annual fee for the lease would be $23,000 with a three per cent annual increase.
