Tim Gates Classic celebrates 10th year running

The funds raised from the event went to the Tim Gates Foundation, which helps young lifesavers to develop their skills and improve beach safety.

Tim “Gatesy” Gates was a dedicated member of Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club who died in a a surfing accident at Fairhaven Beach in 2008.

The Tim Gates Classic was established in his honour in 2010.

Race organiser Gabby McKeown said the club was delighted with the event’s reception.

“We are so happy with the run for 2020. With participants from all age groups (oldest being 78), it is a great way for the club to reflect on everything that Gatesy did for Fairhaven. So many people come down every year just for the Tim Gates Run, which is a testament to what he meant to so many people.”

While the final figure is yet to be confirmed, it is expected the event raised about $20,000 for the Tim Gates Foundation.

More than 600 people competed in the five-kilometre run alone.

Running wonderkid Alexander Angus won the male category with a time of 18 minutes and 34 seconds. Angus was also competing in the Under 18 category

Annabelle Shannon won the female category, finishing in 21 minutes and 36 seconds.

The 10-kilometre male category run was won by Michael Kernahan, who won comfortably with a time of 33 minutes and six seconds.

The female category was won by Amelia Moore, finishing in 47 minutes and 33 seconds. Clare Cameron came a close second, also finishing in under 48 minutes.
