Tom Harrison to be a voice for everyone

AT THE age of 22, Tom Harrison is among the youngest of the candidates so far in the City of Greater Geelong council elections, but says he will be a councillor for all ages.
The Clifton Springs resident is running in the Bellarine Ward and aims to be active and energetic in enhancing the Bellarine way of life.
“I love the Bellarine, and I think it’s a terrific place, and I love the people of the Bellarine, and I was encouraged by a lot of the locals to throw my hat in the ring and give it a go,” he said.
Mr Harrison is campaigning on issues including preserving the natural environment, improving local infrastructure, supporting the regional economy and encouraging sustainable development in keeping with the unique character of the region.
The 2020 local government elections in Victoria will be very different to any held before because of the limitations imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Mr Harrison said this would be a challenge for candidates.
“I think it’s a lot different this time around, obviously we’re in times we’ve never seen before, but I think different platforms need to be used in order to reach the people of the Bellarine and let them know about my message.
“A lot of the traditional ways aren’t available in the current climate – for example, door knocking – so it’s been different.
“I think candidates will have to be creative in the way they go about campaigning, but it’s good fun, and I’m really looking forward to it.
“It’s been a bit of a steep learning curve, but that’s all part of the process.”
He does not see himself explicitly as the youth candidate seeking the youth vote.
“I’ve had extensive experience building relationships with people of all ages and all walks of life,” he said.
“I think in the same way I can appeal to the youth with my age, I can also appeal to the older generation – I’ve grown up around a lot of older people and learnt a lot from them on the golf course. I don’t think specifically the youth vote is part of my vote – I’ll be a voice for all, and all ages, and I can represent all walks of life.”
He said he was standing as an independent candidate not associated with any political party.
“I’m very keen to be a voice for everyone. As issues and topics arise in council, it’ll be more of a consultancy type of leadership. I’m really focused on consulting with the people of the Bellarine and acting in accordance to their best interests.”
At least half a dozen people have declared their intentions to stand in the Bellarine Ward ahead of nominations opening today (Thursday, September 17), and Mr Harrison said he was optimistic about his chances.
“You’ve got to be willing to give it a shot to find out.
“I think the election is shaping up well. I’ve seen signs of some people who are running as candidates – I’ve put down a few of my own signs as well. I think it’s great, it’s part of the democratic process, and it’s great that people have a choice.”
