GEELONG College duo Bailey Gait and Remy Locke have topped their cohort to be jointly awarded their school’s dux with an ATAR score of 99.50.

The Torquay pair, who have been friends for just under 10 years, received the good news today (Monday, December 12) as VCE results were released to 2022 Year 12 students across the state this morning.

Bailey said it was a proud and surreal moment to finish her studies, particularly after several difficult pandemic-interrupted years.

“It’s a really proud moment and I am so happy that all the hard work that I have put in has come off throughout my time at Geelong College,” she said.

“I really hoped a girl would get the dux of the College and when I found out it was myself and Remy, it made it even better.

“Remy and I have been friends and played soccer since we were 10 years old, so it’s special to share it with her.”

Gait completed French, Chemistry, English and Mathematic Methods in 2022, while she studied Further Mathematics and Legal Studies in 2021 in Year 11.

Remy was also excited to have completed her studies, and said she was relieved that students across the state experienced an almost pre-COVID year.

“I was just glad that we got to have a COVID-free year and got to do all the amazing, fun things that Year 12 students do,” she said.

“This year I did Physical Education, English, Maths Methods and Chemistry and then last year I did Psychology and Further Maths.

“It was so surreal and such a ‘wow’ moment when I was told by Dr Miller that I was the co-dux.

“I’ve loved everything about being at Geelong College.”

In 2023, Remy hopes to start a science degree at the University of Melbourne and then complete her honours in veterinary medicine.

Bailey hopes to attend the University of Melbourne to study biomedicine and then study dentistry and orthodontics in Melbourne or at Kings College in London.

Both students said that they put their hard work and educational diligence down to the extracurricular programs at the college, their families, friends and fellow student body who were an integral part of their success.

At St Joseph’s College Newtown, Lochlann Dess was quietly celebrating after he earned the title of College dux for his 98.8 study score.

Principal Tony Paatsch congratulated Lochlann on his excellent results and said 30.9 percent of students achieved an ATAR greater than 80.

“We were delighted to receive some outstanding individual results that will help our students fast-track to the next stage of their education or career,” Paatsch said.

“We are immensely proud of all who persevered and completed their VCE and VCAL after what has been a resilience building last few years.”
