Tourism stars shine at state awards
It was celebration time for tourism operators across the Geelong, Bellarine and Great Ocean Road region who were recognised for excellence at last week’s Victorian Tourism Awards.
Geelong Gallery (Cultural Tourism), Higher Mark – Geelong Cats (Business Event Venues) and Searoad Ferries (Major Tour/Transport Operators) all took out major category wins at the annual awards.
Hosted by the Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC), the awards honoured business excellence and performance within the industry during 2021.
Searoad Ferries CEO Matt McDonald said winning the prestigious award was a credit to their team who had shown great resilience, innovation and dedication during these challenging times.
“Our team has worked hard to make the ferry crossing more than just a transport option,” Mr McDonald said.
“It’s fantastic to be recognised for the role we play in connecting visitors with the spectacular Bellarine and Mornington Peninsulas, and for the unique and unforgettable on-board experience we provide our customers during the crossing.”
The Higher Mark team from GHMBHA Stadium was also on a high following their win, saying in a social media post they were excited to win gold after what had been a challenging time.
“Thank you to our wonderful team for always going the extra mile and crafting exceptional events for our clients … we love this industry,” they said.
Geelong Gallery was in celebration mode, saying they were proud to win gold and congratulating their entire team.
Other local operators to win well-deserved recognition were Accessible Accommodation (Excellence in Accessible Tourism silver) and Wildlife Wonders, Apollo Bay (New Tourism Business silver), Royal Geelong Yacht Club Summer of Sailing (Major Festivals & Events bronze), The Great Sleepover – Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism (Tourism Marketing & Campaigns bronze), Adventure Park Geelong (Tourism Attraction finalist), and See All Dolphin Swims (Ecotourism finalist).
VTIC chief executive, Felicia Mariani, said the awards highlighted the innovation and passion its operators exhibit every day in creating magical moments for their visitors.
“This year’s celebration feels especially meaningful,” Ms Mariani said.
“Operators in Victoria have encountered more obstacles in their businesses than any other state in the country, having to press pause and restart to accommodate six lockdowns and more than 260 days under restrictions during the pandemic.
“We congratulate all our gold, silver and bronze category winners, along with all this year’s finalists.”
The three local gold category winners will now go on to represent Victoria at the 2021 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in March.
