Towering ship to lead 2025 Passage Race at Festival of Sails
THE tall ship STS Young Endeavour will lead the start of the 182nd Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race at the 2025 Festival of Sails.
Its towering masts and sails will be stretched high into the sky to kick off an unforgettable weekend in Geelong from January 25 to January 27.
The Young Endeavour will accompany the fleet of more than 300 boats through the entirety of the Passage Race and will then be docked at Wangim Walk for festival attendees to explore.
Festival of Sails chairman Phil Francis said the ship’s inclusion in the festival would be a cherished moment in the event’s rich history.
“We are excited to have the STS Young Endeavour take on such a pivotal role at the 2025 Festival of Sails,” he said.
“This historic moment, with a tall ship leading the charge, truly highlights the festival’s legacy and the significance of the Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race. It will be a spectacular sight and an exhilarating start to the event.”
Key VIPs including government officials, media representatives, and Festival of Sails regatta officials including principal race officer Steve Aulich will board the vessel for the journey.
“Being part of this historic moment on the STS Young Endeavour is an incredible experience,” Mr Aulich said.
“It’s not every day you get to witness the start of the Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race from aboard such a magnificent vessel, and I’m looking forward to sharing this moment with all those on board.”
Young Australians aged between 16 and 23 have been taking training voyages on the Young Endeavour since 1988.
The 2025 Festival of Sails is expected to be the biggest and best one yet, with more activities, racing and world class sailing action than ever before.
