A woman has died following a devastating early morning house fire in Norlane, prompting a major investigation by Arson and Explosives Squad detectives.

Emergency services were called to a block of units on Thompson Road about 3am on Tuesday, 31 March, after reports of a fire.

Fire crews worked quickly to bring the blaze under control before making a grim discovery inside one of the properties.

An unresponsive woman was located within the unit.

Despite efforts by emergency responders at the scene, she could not be revived. She is yet to be formally identified.

Two local men have since been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

A 35-year-old Norlane man and a 38-year-old Breakwater man are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire, including how it started.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Norlane community, with residents waking to emergency sirens and a heavy police presence in the area.

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around the time of the fire to come forward.
