United record history-making win
HISTORY was made last night (Thursday, November 7) at Geelong Arena, with Geelong United winning its first WNBL match.
United defeated reigning champions Southside Flyers 90-87 in a seesawing contest.
The home side led at every break and held off a late burst from the Flyers in the last term to run out three-point winners.
Geelong had an even contribution from all five starters, four of whom scored in double digits.
It was another huge performance for captain Keely Froling, who scored 18 points and collected 14 rebounds in a double-double.
US import Haley Jones and guard Gemma Potter also had strong games, scoring 19 and 12 points respectively to co-anchor the offence.
For the Flyers, Naz Hillmon did her best to keep the travelling side in the game, putting up 27 points and pulling down 10 boards.
A power forward who has suited up for Atlanta Dream in the WNBA the past three seasons, Hillmon will be a player to watch throughout 2024-25 campaign.
United have evened the ledger at 1-1 and will look to build a winning streak this Sunday, November 10 against the Bendigo Spirit.
Bendigo is fresh off a 14-point win over the Adelaide Lightning.
Dynamic shooting duo Sami Whitcomb and Casey Samuels amassed 27 and 21 points respectively. United will need to keep the pair on a tight leash if they are to have a chance at taking home the win.
Tip-off is at 12:30pm.
