Full steam ahead for upgrade at Bellarine Railway

June 4, 2020 BY

Geelong Steam Preservation Society, trading as The Bellarine Railway, has received a $300,000 state government grant.

BELLARINE MP Lisa Neville has announced a $300,000 grant for the Geelong Steam Preservation Society, trading as The Bellarine Railway, to go towards Stage 1 of the Bellarine Railway Rehabilitation Project.
“Congratulations to past President Adam Sandry, current president Stephen Dalton, as well as Andrew Bridger – owner of The Q Train – in working collaboratively to upgrade this great facility on the Bellarine,” Ms Neville said this week.
“Thanks also to the many volunteers that assist in keeping the trains operational.”
The rehabilitation project has three stages. Stage one is the development of the Turntable Paddock at Drysdale Railway Station to enhance the site, improve community access, and provide a base for the principal Bellarine Railway service, the award winning train dining experience – The Q Train.
The state government grant will support business growth, create jobs and attract more visitors in the years ahead to enjoy the beauty of the Bellarine.
The funding continues to build on the restoration works done at the Queenscliff Station, ensuring the Bellarine Railway continues its great work for the community. It was established by locals and continues to be managed by local people that bring much benefit to the region.
Drysdale Station is perfectly located beside Lake Lorne. The existing precinct is well presented and attracts a great number of visitors from across the region.
This project aims to establish Drysdale station as a gateway for The Bellarine Railway at the Geelong end, and turn the railway into a destination for visitors to the region, as well as the local community.
“The state government recognises the enormous potential for tourism operators on the Bellarine to expand their operations, that’s why it’s backing the Bellarine Railway Rehabilitation Project to ensure they remain a place to visit,” Ms Neville said.
