Vision Australia visits Geelong Library
PARTICIPANTS at Preschool Story Time at Geelong Library on Friday last week were joined by some special visitors.
Vision Australia partnered with the library to host the event, reading stories and completing activities with seeing eye dogs Margo and Uft in attendance.
Through the partnership and interactive activities, children and families were able to gain a fresh perspective on inclusivity.
Geelong Regional Libraries chief executive officer Vanessa Schernickau said it was invaluable to have Vision Australia involved in the day.
“Their expertise and tactile resources, like brail books and touch-and-feel learning materials, allowed us to provide a unique experience we wouldn’t normally have access to.
“It also helped us learn how we can make our libraries more inclusive and welcoming for everyone.”
During the story time session, children experienced Braille book readings, a hands-on tactile nursery rhyme activity and the highlight of the day, meeting the seeing eye dogs.
Ms Schernickau said the children had a fantastic time.
“They were fascinated by how the seeing-eye dogs behaved differently when their harnesses were removed.
“They also loved the tactile nursery rhyme book, trying to guess the songs based on the objects on the page.”
