THE West Oval will soon be transformed into a world-class sporting facility with an $11 million makeover receiving the nod of approval.

State Government has joined the City of Greater Geelong to support major upgrades to the oval which is home to the Geelong West and the Geelong Cycling Clubs.

Councillor Ron Nelson said the oval has the potential to become an alternate to Kardinia Park, bringing in some major competition to the western suburb.

“The Council is proud of its investment in this much-needed $11 million upgrade, which includes a club gym and space to fit 200 guests, allowing these clubs to grow and thrive.

“West Oval is home to several sporting clubs and these upgrades will make it a second regional level facility capable of hosting AFLW and VFL games,” he said.

Plans for the new pavilion include a double-storey design with home and away changerooms, all-access bathroom facilities and much-needed storage.

Upgrades will be made to the club’s amenities, including a new commercial kitchen, bar and kiosk.

The funding for the new pavilion was announced back in 2018 with work set to be completed by September 2021.

The transformation follows as the G21 – Geelong Regional Alliance AFL Barwon Regional Strategy identified the West Oval as a primary location for hosting regional football finals, AFLW, TAC Cup and VFL games.

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens was proud to deliver the $7.4 million commitment from State Government that welcomes more female competition.

“Congratulations to the Geelong West Giants for their advocacy for this facility, and their focus on providing female-friendly sports facilities,” Ms Couzens said.

“This club’s promotion of female sport and leadership in the community is to be commended.”

Additional upgrades have been promised to the Geelong West Netball Club with the resurfacing of the courts, a new warm-up area and enhanced seating and carpark spaces.

The major works will not damage the historic elements of the venue with the heritage listed Flowers Family Stand to receive minor modifications.
