Wheely excited for summer
GEELONG’s ferris wheel could soon be up and running once again, with proponents applying to have the attraction spinning by next month.
The Giant Sky Wheel has submitted a planning application to return to the waterfront for the upcoming summer and reinstate one of the city’s main tourism drawcards.
The operator wants the massive wheel erected in time for White Night, which is on October 8.
Its latest application also applies to extend its operating period to September to July each year, up from its current November to April permit.
Proponents said between 60,000 and 80,000 people experienced the wheel each year for the past 12 years as it asked for permission to bring back the attraction.
“(The Giant Sky Wheel) assists in creating a fun and lively focus for the waterfront,” the application said.
“The general public regularly praise the Giant Sky Wheel for the ambience it creates and they love hearing the Giant Sky Wheel as part of the foreshore because of its unique attributes and the fun adventure it offers to families for a ride.
“It’s a great opportunity to have an attraction like the Giant Sky Wheel for the entire Geelong community and visitors to the region.”
