The current trend for nature-inspired interiors is causing a shift in where engineered timber is being used.

GEELONG has been declared the home of Australia’s best regional museum.

In a recent win for the region, the National Wool Museum took out top place in the 2024 Wotif Uniquely Aussie Award in the Best Regional Museum category.

Museum director Padraic Fisher said the award was particularly rewarding because its recognition came from the community and general public.

“It’s really exciting and lovely that the general public has said this is our favourite museum,” Mr Fisher said.

Geelong is well known for its wool industry, with the CJ Dennys & Co Woolstore opening in 1872 and now home to the National Wool Museum.

The bluestone building showcases the history of Australia’s wool industry and features a range of temporary exhibitions.

Mr Fisher encouraged everybody to visit the museum.

“We invite not only the residents of the area, but be a tourist in your own home and come and visit your museum,” he said.

“Bring your friends and family who come and visit you to your museum as well, and we invite them to come and see what’s happening in Geelong.”

The National Wool Museum took out the prize for Best Regional Museum in the 2024 Wotif Uniquely Aussie Award.

Mr Fisher congratulated all the other state finalists in what he described as a vibrant time for regions and regional experiences.

“As a regional presence it’s terrific for us to have this kind of recognition and kudos to all of the other regional institutions for the work they do. We are in great company,” he said.

The museum is operated by the City of Greater Geelong and a team of volunteers.

Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said the city was proud of the National Wool Museum and rapt to see it receive recognition.

“The success of the museum is a testament to the passion and dedication of our amazing staff and volunteers,” Cr Sullivan said. “They work so hard to make it a vibrant place and give visitors an outstanding experience every time.”

The National Wool Museum is open seven days a week between 10am and 5pm.
