XTM and BBF partner for Night for takayna

THIS February, the Bob Brown Foundation is teaming up with Surf Coast snow and outdoor company XTM to bring a special screening of environmental activism film Night for takayna to the Geelong community.

Set to be screened at the Pivotonian Cinema in South Geelong on February 12, the short film details stories and science from the threatened forests of North-Western Tasmania, documenting six months of campaigning against mining company MMG to save the unique rainforest from a toxic tailings dam.

Along with showcasing the raw emotions of citizens fighting against development, the film presents the magical biodiversity of the wilderness environment including the discovery of a pair of masked owls and a new species of moth.

 

“The Tarkine/takayna is one of the richest natural carbon sinks in Australia – it is a vital cog in our ongoing battle against climate change,” XTM founder Pete Forras said.

“It is home to over a dozen endangered species, including the iconic Tasmanian Devil and is an area that is rich in indigenous artefacts and cultural sites that date back many thousands of years.

“Today we are at risk of losing this beautiful location permanently as more and more mining leases are granted for areas within The Tarkine and have moved towards the next stages of exploration.

“It would be a tragedy if we allowed an area such as Tarkine/takayna to be destroyed through further deforestation and mining.”

Bob Brown Foundation campaign organiser, Molly Coburn echoed Forras’ sentiment, saying it was “imperative that we protect these remarkable and incredibly special landscapes from mining and logging.

“Once they are gone, they are gone, it’s critical that we show these places to people through whichever means possible, so they can join the fight to protect takayna before it is gone.”

XTM and the Bob Brown Foundation hope the film can inspire the community to continue to advocate, save the planet and get out and explore natures wonders.
