Years of payback for renewable donations
GEELONG Sustainability (GS) has launched a new fundraising initiative to expand a successful renewable energy infrastructure trust.
GS is calling for contributions to its “Neverending Donation” appeal, which provides money for its Community Energy Revolving Fund (CERF).
The CERF launched earlier this year and provides interest-free loans to local organisations to install infrastructure such as solar panels and batteries, with the money paid back to the fund over time through power bill savings.
GS executive officer Dan Cowdell said the fundraising concept expands on the idea, with donations going towards new renewable projects then returning to the kitty for investment elsewhere.
“This fun initiative is really a great way to encourage our community to think outside the box when it comes to their approach to renewable energy. Your neverending donation, will help the community and the environment – it’s a win-win”, Mr Cowdell said.
“Donations are used to provide interest free loans to community groups, facilitating the installation of renewable technologies on their buildings, with repaid funds used to finance additional projects.
“For example, if a local footy club accesses the loan to install solar on their building, your donation can help turn one solar panel into 10 solar panels via our neverending donation initiative.”
New solar panels at the YMCA stadium at Newtown was among the first projects to benefit local non-profit organisations and expects to save $14,000 a year from with its new 60-kilowatt solar system.
GS hopes to extend its fund to several more organisations such as community houses, sports clubs and service groups across Geelong, the Surf Coast and the Bellarine following additional fundraising.
“The more funds we have available, the more renewable projects we can deliver,” Mr Cowdell said.
