You Yangs plan
THE Victorian government has released its final You Yangs Precinct Masterplan after three years consulting with key stakeholders and the public about the future management of the Regional Park and Serendip Sanctuary.
It includes options to upgrade the visitor information centre, carparks, picnic and BBQ areas, and existing tracks and trails to support bushwalking, trail-running, sightseeing, rock-climbing and abseiling and horse riding.
In a joint statement from the Andrews Government, it’s noted that “the You Yangs has a rich cultural landscape with a history dating back more than 30,000 years”.
“The plan aligns with the aspirations of the Wadawurrung people, Traditional Owners of the land, for future joint management of the park,” Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said.
“This masterplan for the future of the You Yangs respects the deep connection that Wadawurrung Traditional Owners have to these lands and waters and strikes the right balance between conservation and visitation.”
Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas described the You Yangs as an “icon” for the greater Geelong and Bellarine region.
“I am looking forward to seeing it enjoyed by locals and visitors for years to come,” Ms Thomas said.
In a nod to the increasing popularity of the site as a mountain-biking destination, there’s a recommendation to create a mountain-biking hub with improved facilities, a kiosk and storage rooms.
“The You Yangs and Serendip Sanctuary are special places for the community and I am delighted to see a plan that celebrates the cultural heritage of the area and seeks to improve the way people enjoy the park,” said local Lara MP John Eren.
The plan states that Serendip Sanctuary will be continue to be available to be used for wildlife conservation and breeding programs delivered in partnership with other organisations, along with upgrades to visitor facilities for schools and groups.
According to the government the master plan is a strategic document that sets out a vision and recommended direction for the precinct, but at this stage all initiatives in the plan still require detailed assessment, planning and funding.
