ST JOSEPH’S female footy team are again looking forward to being part of the club’s big Anzac Day (Friday, April 25) at McDonald Reserve.

They typically play South Barwon but this year will play Thomson at 2.15pm after being promoted to AFL Barwon Division 1.

“It’s their (Thomson’s) home game and they’ve agreed to have the opportunity to give the women’s game a bit of feature and focus,” Joeys coach Chris Hickey said.

Recruits Rorri Phibbs (Geelong West), Mon Martin (Modewarre), Hayley Gunn and Mikayla Robinson made their club debuts as Joeys fell to Lara by seven points in their season-opener a fortnight ago.

Hickey said Joeys were trying to change their angles and not just territory kick down the line.

“We’ve been working on creating handball chains to get the ball to the outside more and put speed on it going into the forward line; rather than just taking predictable lines and being easy to defend,” he said.

Not being too hard on themselves is also a focal point as they adjust to their new division.

“We’ve tried to build from the base as a club and we’ve had strong under-18s for the last three or four years and a group of (about seven) them are coming through,” Hickey said.

“So it’s them getting the opportunity to step up, we’re trying to enjoy it and maintain our culture, those sorts of things are really important to us.”

The other Round 3 matches will be played tomorrow (Saturday, April 26).
