Building a brighter future for all
METRICON prides itself on being a builder that provides pathways to employment no matter your background or financial position, and this is why Metricon’s scholarship advocacy is such an important initiative from the building group.
This year, four new promising individuals on the cusp of their career have been named as recipients of the 2025 Mario Biasin Legacy Scholarships.
Announced last week at the inaugural Building & Construction Foundation Gala, supported by Australia’s biggest home builder Metricon, the annual scholarships provide financial support to aspiring individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have faced barriers in pursuing education and career opportunities in the construction industry.
Established in 2022 in honour of Metricon co-founder Mario Biasin, the scholarships aim to uphold his legacy of fostering diverse talent through equal opportunity.
Split across two categories, the scholarships assist those at the start of their career undertaking an apprenticeship in a skilled trade, as well as those pursuing building or construction related diplomas or degrees.
Early Career Category (Awarded $2,500 each):
Madison Barnett: Madison is pursuing a Certificate III in Electrotechnology while facing significant socio-economic hardship following a family breakdown. This scholarship will help MB purchase the tools and workwear needed to continue building her electrical career, with hopes to eventually mentor others facing hardship
Tylah St Anne: An apprentice pursuing a Certificate III in Carpentry, Tylah supports her mother and younger siblings while struggling with low wages and high living costs. Committed to building a career in carpentry, this support will fund tools, workwear and transport costs to help her progress.
Leadership Category (Awarded $5,000 each):
Ahmed Hassan: A recent migrant to Australia, Ahmed is undergoing a Diploma of Building and Construction to help with this job prospects in construction project management. Despite having over 10 years of international experience, a lack of local experience and differing industry regulations has meant he has struggled to secure work while trying to support his wife and two young children. This scholarship will relieve financial pressure and help Ahmed complete his studies to obtain essential certifications
Stephan Kaleopa: Stephan is completing a Bachelor in Construction Management while helping to care for younger siblings and facing financial hardship. This scholarship will help fund a laptop, learning materials and course costs to help put him on a path to career success.
Metricon chief executive officer Brad Duggan said Metricon was incredibly proud to support the next generation of the industry through these scholarships.
“Mario Biasin built Metricon on a foundation of community and support, always ensuring our team has equal access to the development and training needed to thrive.
“These scholarships allow us to extend that commitment to the broader industry, helping to open doors for those who have faced socio economic barriers in their pursuit of a successful career.
“We hope Mario would be proud of the impact we are striving to achieve, and we look forward to seeing how each recipient’s career unfolds,” Mr Duggan concluded.
Building & Construction Foundation executive director Sara Abraham said that as leaders in the construction industry, Metricon’s support of its commitment to helping marginalised individuals in the sector is very impactful.
“We’re incredibly appreciative of this partnership and the financial contributions that continue to help empower the next generation.”
