Metricon Homes reported a total of 3,894 new home sales across four states during 2023-24, despite a market slowdown in demand due to the rise in interest rates.

Metricon has been named Australia’s number one home builder for the ninth consecutive year in the latest HIA Colorbond Steel Housing Top 100 Report. This has also consolidated the company’s total number of builds over the last nine years to close to 44,000 homes.HIA chief economist Tim Reardon said it had been a decade of dominance for Metricon Homes as they are, for the ninth consecutive year, the nation’s largest residential builder.

“Metricon Homes reported a total of 3,894 new home sales across four states during the 2023-24 despite a market slowdown in demand due to the rise in interest rates.

“Market confidence is returning to the new home market as interest rates remained on hold for the tenth consecutive month.

“Low levels of unemployment and strong population growth have driven ongoing demand for new homes, despite the increase in the cost of borrowing and a decline in household consumption.”

The HIA cautions the outlook for home building is increasingly dominated by local factors such as the price of land and state government taxes.

Metricon CEO Brad Duggan said that over the past nine years, tens of thousands of Australians have trusted Metricon to bring their dream homes to life.

Mr Reardon said population growth through the pandemic and then a return of overseas migration has seen a stabilisation of building levels in 2023-24 similar to that seen immediately prior to the pandemic.

“This bodes well for a more stable return to building activity in future years.”

The 2023-24 Report ranks Australia’s top 100 residential builders based on the number of home builds commenced

each year.

Metricon’s total of 3,894 starts was across Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia.

However, this milestone comes with a stark warning from Metricon chief executive officer Brad Duggan about the state of Australia’s construction industry.

“While we are proud of Metricon’s achievements last year, we note that to be the largest builder in Australia with under 4,000 site starts, it’s clear that the country is falling behind on delivering the homes that have been identified as essential,”

Mr Duggan said.

“We need to accelerate momentum in the industry, it’s time to move beyond the sole focus on social housing and tackle the bigger picture: cutting planning red tape, increasing access to land, growing the country’s trade base, scrapping discussions on tax changes impacting investors and superannuation funds, and crucially, addressing the cost-of-living crisis.

“These are the real levers to restore customer confidence and get people building again.”

Mr Duggan said the company’s continued leadership reflected a deep-rooted commitment to quality and affordability, which remains a key driver for Australians choosing Metricon.

“Over the past nine years, tens of thousands of Australians have trusted Metricon to bring their dream homes to life.

“This responsibility drives us every day, we’ve built a reputation for delivering on our promise of high-quality homes without compromising affordability, thanks to our strong network of suppliers and trades,” Mr

Duggan said.

Despite challenging market conditions, Metricon has shown remarkable consistency over the years, and Mr Duggan is confident the company is well-positioned for the future.
