TORQUAY SLSC hosted the annual Torquay/Jan Juc Friendly Surf Sports Carnival on Friday last week.

Held in between official carnivals, the “friendly” saw more than 200 Nippers from Under 7 to Under 13 take part in a variety of events including swimming, board races, relays and beach flags.

Both clubs were delighted with the event’s continued success.

Torquay Nipper director Matt Henderson said the event was enjoyed by both children and parents alike.

“As a two-club town, it’s a great opportunity for the kids to race against their schoolmates and teammates in other sports, so while the racing is real it was smiles all around.

“The friendly carnival was lots of fun, and it’s pleasing to see so many parents and kids involved in keeping our beaches safe now and into the future. This event has been growing since our first one a few years back so I’m hoping we are building a community tradition that will continue for a long time yet.”

Jan Juc Nipper director Kate Walsh similarly praised the event. She said while it was still in its infancy, she believed it would run for years to come.

“It’s an amazing opportunity having two closely located surf clubs come together for a fun mini-carnival between friends from ‘the other club’.

“The Torquay Jan Juc Friendly Carnival has become a popular feature on the calendar for our Nippers who love being part of this fun, historical rivalry between the two clubs.

“Thanks to TSLSC for hosting and organising this year’s event and dinner afterwards in the clubhouse. We look forward to holding it at Jan Juc next year in our new clubhouse.”
