Determined Swans eliminate Giants from finals contention
SOUTH Barwon will move onto next week’s Semi-Final to face St Joseph’s after defeating Geelong West in yesterday’s (Saturday, September 3) Elimination Final, 43-54.
The Swans outscored the Giants in all four quarters of the game to eliminate Geelong West from premiership contention in back-to-back years.
The Swans got out to a 12-15 lead at quarter-time and coach Jordee Nichols’ side won the second term against Geelong West 14-11 to earn themselves a comfortable six-goal lead at half time, 23-29.
Geelong West’s deficit continued to grow in the third term, again outscored 10-12, which saw South Barwon carry an eight-goal lead with a quarter to play.
South Barwon shooter and reigning A Grade best and fairest Ellen Doyle continued her dominance in the scoring third, eclipsing the 40-goal mark in the fourth quarter.
Another quarter win for the Swans, this time 10-13, helped South Barwon get out to a double-digit lead and eventually run away with the result by 11 goals.
Doyle finished the game with 43 goals next to goal-attack and captain Olivia Cameron, who concluded the afternoon with 11 goals.
Geelong West’s Aleisha McDonald notched up 25 goals in the contest, while Rachel Palmer-Brennan scored 18 goals over four quarters.
Palmer-Brennan, Rachel Leader and Alahria Smith were named best-on-court for Geelong West.
South Barwon will meet Joeys in next Sunday’s (September 10) Semi Final back at West Oval Reserve for a chance to play in this year’s Preliminary Final at Leopold Memorial Park.
