Dual-sport gun locked in for WNBL season
GEELONG United has added substantial firepower to its ranks, signing star AFLW player and former Melbourne Boomers player Monique Conti for the 2024-25 season.
Standing at 5’5″, the guard will become part of United’s maiden WNBL side at the conclusion of the coming AFLW season, her sixth for the Richmond Tigers.
Conti said she was ready for the challenge of joining a new club and for what she can offer to her new home of Geelong.
“I’m really excited for the fresh start in Geelong.
“We’re putting together a great group, so I’m looking forward to what lies ahead.”
Head coach Chris Lucas has a history with Conti, with both serving several seasons at the Boomers.
Both are looking forward to joining forces again in the WNBL.
“I’m really happy to have Monique join the new Geelong franchise,” Lucas said.
“Her improvement last year, she really excelled and took on her role within the team.
“She’s super-fit, she brings a presence on the floor, she can shoot the ball, and defensively she fits everything I want from her.”
Conti’s AFLW accolades are wide-ranging, including a league best and fairest, an AFLW premiership in 2018 and best on ground in that game.
She also won a WNBL Championship in 2020. Conti averaged 8.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game over 23 games in 2023 for the Boomers.
