GEELONG United Basketball (GUB) and its NBL1 Women’s head coach Matt Paton have announced they are parting ways effective immediately, just under a month away from the start of the NBL1 South season.

The sudden announcement comes only a one month after the club confirmed a one-year extension with Paton as the senior women’s head coach for 2024 in early February.

“After careful consideration and discussions between GUB and Matthew, both parties have concluded that it is in the best interest of the organisation and the coach to pursue separate paths moving forward,” the association said in a statement.

“Geelong United Basketball extends its gratitude to Matthew for his contributions during his tenure.

“Matthew also expresses appreciation to GUB, its management, staff, players, and fans for the support and opportunities provided during his time with the club.”

Paton served three seasons as Geelong United’s women’s coach after being signed by the club at the end of 2019.

GUB will now need to announce Paton’s replacement ahead of United’s season opener against Ballarat at Selkirk Stadium in Round 1, just 30 days away.

The coaching change is the club’s second senior head coaching departure in as many seasons, with former men’s head coach Justin Schueller departing United prior to the 2023 campaign.

Four players are rostered to Geelong United’s women’s squad: returning players Eve Braslis, Sarah Elsworthy, and Jessica Scannell, and new addition Kobe Tehau King-Hawea.

The club is expected to make further player announcements in the coming weeks.
