THE chance to create Geelong Amateur’s first ever pride guernsey was an opportunity Ammos female footballer Lucy Were could not pass up ahead of this weekend’s AFL Barwon Pride Round.

More local sporting clubs than ever across the region will don a splash of colour on their uniforms to help spread the message of inclusivity as part of AFL Barwon’s Pride Round from June 8-11.

“Designing our guernsey was pretty amazing to do,” Were said.

“Even talking about all the colour and support we get, seeing everyone getting around this initiative is really exciting.

“Our senior female football coordinator Noel Taylor, he’s been amazing in the support that he shows, the initiative to get these jumpers up and going, and what he’s been able to organise for this round along with other people in the club is amazing.”

Ammos will host Barwon Heads at Queens Park Reserve this Sunday in AFL Barwon’s Division 1 competition.

Alongside Geelong Amateur, clubs to have new colour-themed design uniforms for this weekend include Drysdale, Geelong West, Newtown & Chilwell, South Barwon, St Mary’s, and Anglesea.

Regional manager Edward Wilson said AFL Barwon is proud to lead the Pride Round across all regional community football and netball competitions and leagues this coming weekend.

“We’re incredibly proud of everyone who makes up our local community and strives to provide support and integrated equitable opportunities, for all,” he said.

“Pride Round supports this vision significantly and we’re proud to work with clubs, partners and stakeholders locally, who support our diversity and inclusion values and objectives.”

Pride Round forms one of six AFL Barwon community themed rounds for 2023.
