Local lifesavers perform in the pool

LIFE Saving Victoria’s (LSV) athletes have put on impressive performances away from the beaches following a successful return to the Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships.

Athletes from across the state, including from the Surf Coast and the Bellarine, gave it their all, in events like mannikin tows and carries, line throw, obstacle swim, medley relays and super lifesaver events.

Ocean Grove SLSC member and Victorian state team representative Stephanie Reade said she enjoys pool lifesaving because it helps her to remain rescue ready for the summer patrol season.

“Pool lifesaving teaches you rescue methods and allows you to consolidate vital skills from a relatively young age,” she said.

“For me personally, preparing for the CPR component of the championships has allowed me to improve the confidence I have in my abilities as a rescue-ready lifesaver.”

Among dozens of first place finishes and high placings, Teagan Reade (Stephanie’s sister) was awarded the honours of under 14 overall champion, Tallulah Rush of Jan Juc SLSC was crowned under 16 overall champion, and William Goldstraw of Ocean Grove SLSC secured third place overall in the under 14 cohort.

LSV general manager education, sport and club development Kate Simpson praised the state’s representatives for their efforts representing their clubs and the state on the national stage.

“LSV is incredibly proud of our athletes and officials for their fantastic display of skills against the nation’s highest quality athletes at the 2022 Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships,” Ms Simpson said.

“This event showcases the top sporting heroes of pool lifesaving, who are also heroes within their community, as active members of our lifesaving clubs and patrol service.

“Pool lifesaving is not only an opportunity for our lifesavers to keep fit and push themselves against Australia’s best athletes, it’s also a great way for members to stay engaged with lifesaving and aquatic sport during the winter months.”

LSV’s pool athletes return to action at the Victorian Pool Lifesaving Championships currently scheduled for September.
