Shaky start for Tigers in historic milestone

DESPITE an unfavourable result in its inaugural senior women’s match against Geelong Amateur 2, Bannockburn has officially opened its account at the senior women’s level.

The Tigers failed to score against Ammos at Victoria Park, while the visitors kicked 13.15.93 to run away 93-0 winners in the first match of grading.

“We, realistically as a squad, have been together for about four to five weeks. We certainly didn’t come away with what we were hoping for, but the girls, most of who have never played football before, gave it a red-hot crack. They are really looking for ward to get back on the track moving forward,” women’s coach Brendan Smith said.

“We’ve had a full-on and hectic week ranging from jumper presentations on the Friday night and the team announcement in front of 300 people on Thursday.

“It’s been a slow build up to the weekend, but the girls have embraced it magnificently.

“The club has been extremely supportive, but also the senior men’s footballers. It’s been awesome for the girls to receive that kind of guidance.”

Kirra Beckley was named captain for the Tigers’ first contest at the senior level, a historic moment for the club. Kayla McIntosh and Erin Thomson were named vice-captains.

Hayley Boehm, Dharnae Couzens and Tayla Scarlett-Nankervis led the way for Ammos with three goals apiece.

Grading to decide divisions resumes this Sunday, April 30 in Week 2.
