August 28, 2023 BY
THE Victorian state surfing team has returned home from the 2023 Australian Surf Championships with some new silverware to add to the trophy cabinet.

The 17-day national event, which encapsulated longboarding, bodyboarding, para surfing and shortboarding, wrapped up in Port Macquarie on Monday afternoon.

Conditions were perfect for the completion of the Australian Surf Championships at North Haven Beach near Port Macquarie.

Victoria’s 45-strong team included more than 20 from the Surf Coast and Bellarine.

Emma Webb (Anglesea) and Greg Brown (Torquay) were victorious in the Over 40 Women’s Longboard and Over 60 Men’s Longboard divisions, while Bea and Ted Conroy (Point Lonsdale) and Melanie Renton (Ocean Grove) all finished in the finals of their respective longboard and logger divisions.

Emma Webb was victorious in the Over 40 Women Longboard division.

In the bodyboarding divisions, Dane Pope (Armstong Creek) ripped his way to a third place in the Drop Knee division and Tully Roberts (Barwon Heads) secured a fourth-place finish in the Under 16 Cadet Open.

Reigning Under 16 ISA World Junior Champion Willis Droomer (Jan Juc) claimed a third placing in the Open Men’s Shortboard division, while Torquay’s Tiffany Riggs surfed to a fourth on the podium in the Over 35 Women Shortboard.

Willis Droomer surfed to a third place in the Open Men’s Shortboard division.

Surfing Victoria chief executive officer Adam Robertson said he was incredibly proud of the Victorian team’s efforts.

“We were really pleased to see such a great representation from our Victorian Team across all disciplines of the Australian Surf Championships.

“It was terrific to see Emma (Webb) and Browny (Greg Brown) take out Aussie titles once again, and it’s no surprise from seeing how they go about it in the water.

“It was also fantastic to see Willis Droomer continue his growth out of the junior aged divisions and place third in the Open Men’s division.

“Chris Watson, one of our Surfing Victoria board members once again did an incredible job in looking after our bodyboarders, who continue to do us proud and grow the sport in Victoria.”
