Some of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania’s best drivers will be on hand reaching speeds of up to 150 kilometres an hour around the 400-metre dirt track oval in their 900-plus horsepower Sprintcars

Avalon Raceway is a tricky venue for some with a unique layout and an at times testing surface, the “A-Main” winner at the end of a night’s competition has really earned their money.

Between 30 and 50 Sprintcars can compete on any given night at Avalon.

Weighing less than a small road car but with close to 1000 horsepower, Sprintcars have a power to weight ratio comparable to that of a F1 car.

Former World F1 Champion Jackie Stewart once famously described them as “the last frontier in auto racing”.

Speedway nights continue on Saturday night, March 5, with the annual running of the Great Southern Showdown event for Sprintcars.

In Australia we now have several Supercar drivers taking the Sprintcar challenge in addition to their bitumen conquests including Cameron Waters and Brodie Kostecki to name just two.

Waters is a regular at Avalon Raceway in his bright fluro green and yellow Sprintcar.

“A Sprintcar is like nothing on earth,” the Ford Tickford Racing Supercar superstar said.

“Nothing I’ve driven before or since has the same amount of grunt or handling properties. They are a completely different beast to my Monster Energy Tickford Racing Mustang. The challenge to tame them is enormous.”

For over 45 years Avalon Raceway Lara has been entertaining Australians with its own unique brand of motor-tainment.

Wait until you see how fast these things with wings are around our dirt track oval.

It’s a fun night for the whole family.

There’s hot food, cold drinks and fantastic Speedway racing.
