The tee up: this week in golf
STRONG scoring and several standout individual performances highlighted another busy week of golf across The Sands, Torquay and Anglesea.
At The Sands, Adam Georgiou (14) won Monday 18 May’s PGA Championship stableford with 44 points, finishing two points clear of Shad Celan (24) on 42.
Wednesday’s stableford competition produced a trio of 39-point winners, with Harry Whitty (10) taking A-grade, James Munro (15) edging B-grade on countback and Jonas McCallum (33) claiming C-grade.
Thursday’s women’s par event belonged to Kirby Taylor (31), whose impressive +9 score finished well clear of the field.
Strong scoring continued through the weekend. Lachie Cumming (29) posted 42 points to win C-grade on Saturday 23 May, while Ric Thompson (16) claimed B-grade with 41. Scott Whelan (9) took A-grade with 38 points and Kristen Foster (30) won the women’s competition with 37.
Sunday’s medley stableford delivered two of the best rounds of the week, with Anthony Clayton (15) posting 45 points to win B-grade and Riley Dean (10) taking A-grade with 42 points.
At Torquay, David Fischer-Mills continued his strong run of form, winning Monday 18 May’s stableford with 42 points before backing up with a B-grade victory in Wednesday’s par competition at +5.
Tuesday’s Canadian Foursomes event was won by Theresa Rose-Ham and Tracey Anscombe with a score of 65.5, while Wednesday’s par competition produced a strong spread of results.
Frank Fowler (-2) won A-grade with +4, Gerard Whitely (21) topped C-grade with +4 and John Nestor (24) edged D-grade on countback. Chris Thompson collected the nearest-the-pin jackpot.
Thursday’s stableford was highlighted by Max Christie’s remarkable round. Playing off a handicap of -3, Christie posted 39 points and recorded two eagles on his way to victory, edging Warren Gaunt on countback. Lindy Dowler (32) led the women’s field with 40 points.
Friday 22 May produced another batch of strong scores, including 41 points from Dan Schroter (17) in B-grade and 40 from Blake Mios (3) in A-grade.
Saturday’s stableford saw Ben Virtue (7) and Greg Baeck (17) each win their grades with 39 points, while Annie Powell (22) topped the women’s competition with 36.
Sunday’s competition closed with Callum Yates (-2) winning A-grade on countback with 38 points before adding an eagle, while Amanda Locke (13) claimed the women’s event with 38 points.
Dale Anderson also recorded an eagle during the round.
At Anglesea, Wednesday 20 May’s men’s stableford was led by Shane Thompson (10), who posted 43 points to win A-grade. Doug Green (17) claimed B-grade and the Phil Lewtas Trophy with 40 points, while Andy Backwell (31) took C-grade with 42 points.
Thursday’s women’s par competition saw Dee Stewart (17) win A-grade at +4, while Ann Stokes (24) and Alanna Boston (44) each posted +3 to take out B and C-grades respectively.
Saturday 23 May’s four ball aggregate stableford produced the highest team score of the week, with Robert Harris and Jo Murray combining for 77 points.
Paul Lata and Zach Firth finished second on 72 points on countback, narrowly ahead of Geoff Barbour and Philip Morgan.
Sunday 24 May’s par competition rounded out the week.
Nigel Powers (4) won the men’s A-grade with +3, Newton Chan (18) claimed B-grade with +4 and Zak Porter (34) topped C-grade at +2. Marcey Nowell (34) won the women’s event with +1.
