Wylie and Robinson win at URBNSURF

SURFING Victoria and URBNSURF held Australia’s first ever wave pool competition on Sunday, albeit without spectators due to concerns over the coronavirus.

Tully Wylie won the Men’s Open. He narrowly beat Xavier Huxtable in a final that included fellow Surf Coast competitors Harry Mann and Todd Rosewall.

Wylie said he enjoyed the new challenge the wave pool offered.

“That was so nerve-wracking. That’s what is so good about this format, though. It puts pressure on you to perform and it’s super exciting to watch as a spectator.

“I’m just stoked to get a win.”

The Surf Coast was also well represented in the Open Women’s category, with India Robinson taking victory.

Robertson had only returned from the Sydney Surf Pro the night before and was in brilliant form to defeat some strong competition.

Robertson said the wave pool provided a great challenge for competitors.

“This was such a sick event. It was amazing to be a part of it.

“The waves are so fun at URBNSURF, everything from turns to tubes. I’m looking forward to competing here again.”

Barwon Heads’ Ellie Harrison finished third, while Jan Juc’s Mia Huppatz and Bella Wilson also made the final.

Torquay’s Angela King won the Open Women’s Longboard, while Barwon Heads’ Ben Considine won the Open Men’s Longboard event.
