THE Geelong region’s newest library will be open in three weeks, with the City of Greater Geelong today (Thursday, July 11) confirming a final completion date for the facility.<\/p>\n
The Geelong Regional Library Corporation is on track to complete the fitout of the three-storey library this month, including stocking more than 30,000 new books and resources, after builders Nicholson Construction finished work in May.<\/p>\n
The public opening on August 1 will be preceded by an official opening ceremony on July 25.<\/p>\n
Located in the Armstrong Creek Town Centre precinct, the $21.864 million Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library was jointly funded by the city ($20.364 million) and the Victorian government via a Living Libraries grant ($1.5 million).<\/p>\n
Alongside an extensive collection, the library will also feature a children\u2019s story time area, outdoor terraces and multipurpose and creative spaces \u2013 including media studio and maker space.<\/p>\n
Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said he could not wait to see the library open.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe building is so distinctive from the outside and it\u2019s looking amazing inside too.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know the love the community has for our local libraries and this building is going to be a real focal point for Armstrong Creek residents. It\u2019s very exciting to have the opening now so close.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne welcomed the opening date.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Allan Labor Government has invested in over 120 library infrastructure projects over the last eight years, ensuring more Victorians can access library services across the state,” she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis new library will provide important services and spaces for the Armstrong Creek community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geelong Regional Libraries chief executive officer Vanessa Schernickau said libraries were an integral part of healthy local communities.<\/p>\n
“The beautiful new Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library will be an asset to all members of the community, young, old and in between.<\/p>\n
“\u201cThere is a huge amount of work happening behind the scenes ahead of opening day \u2013 the library will be stocked with approximately 32,000 new resources for the community \u2013 our team is currently working through unpacking around 20 pallets of books.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re grateful to the City of Greater Geelong and the Victorian Government for their support, and look forward to opening the doors to the community soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
The building was designed by Buchan Architects, who worked with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners to create a \u2018living water\u2019 narrative.<\/p>\n
The city officially named it the Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library in April 2023.<\/p>\n
“Biyal-a” (pronounced be-al-a) is a Wadawurrung expression reflecting the Armstrong Creek valleyscape and its watercourse as a place of many red gums.<\/p>\n
The facility is targeting a 5-Star Green Star design and construction rating.<\/p>\n
