GEELONG United has added an injection of collegiate star power to its ranks ahead of its inaugural WNBL season.<\/p>\n

United announced the signing of Elissa Brett following a full five-year stint in the college system, most recently at the University of Michigan.<\/p>\n

Australian by birth and nationality, Brett returns to home soil ready to hit the court in the WNBL with Geelong United.<\/p>\n

“It’s really exciting being a part of Geelong’s inaugural team,” Brett said.<\/p>\n

“I’m looking forward to getting amongst the community and contributing to the Geelong United history.<\/p>\n

“I’ll have the opportunity to play in front of my family more often too which was a big deciding factor for me to sign on.”<\/p>\n

Brett appeared in 31 games with 21 starts for the Wolverines, averaging 7.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in 27.3 minutes per game.<\/p>\n

Brett also suited up against WNBA sensation Caitlin Clark in front of 18,000 people where she broke the record for the most points in the NCAA.<\/p>\n

She said despite being the opposition, it was a career highlight to be a part of one of college’s basketball historic nights.<\/p>\n

Brett said the defensive mindset of United head coach Chris Lucas was also a major drawcard for the club’s newest signing.<\/p>\n

“Once I spoke to Chris I knew Geelong would be a good fit for me.<\/p>\n

“He’s pretty defence oriented, so I’ll look to bring my tenacity and work ethic on the defensive end and do all the little things to help our team win.”<\/p>\n

Lucas echoed Brett’s message, as his rotation continues to grow following the signings of Jaz Shelley, Keely Froling and Sarah Elsworthy.<\/p>\n

“Elissa’s extremely tough and has had a great college career. Finishing off in Michigan her numbers were really good,” Lucas said.<\/p>\n

“I just think she’s WNBL ready, and I’m excited for what she’ll bring to the program.”<\/p>\n
