CONSTRUCTION of the highly-anticipated Geelong Youth Hub has moved a step closer, following the awarding of a tender to a local builder.<\/p>\n
Archibald Builders has been selected to complete the project based on the firm’s experience, expertise, value for money and assessment of project risks.<\/p>\n
Construction on the hub, to be located at the Busport building on the corner of Gheringhap Street and Transit Place, is now expected to start next month.<\/p>\n
The hub is part of a two-year pilot program supported by $400,000 in funding from the Victorian government and will serve as a fun, welcoming and inclusive space for Geelong’s young people to gather, enjoy meals, access programs and connect with support services.<\/p>\n
Geelong MP Christine Couzens celebrated the project’s progress.<\/p>\n
“It is fantastic to see the next steps for the new youth hub in Geelong, which will engage young people and keep them connected to employment, counselling and mental health support and services,” she said.<\/p>\n
Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan highlighted the importance of the community input that helped shape the design of the new hub.<\/p>\n
“It’s exciting to see construction begin after such a successful design process led by our local youth,” he said.<\/p>\n
“We want the hub to feel welcoming for all young people, providing access to vital services like mental health support, opportunities to connect with peers, or simply a place to relax.”<\/p>\n
The design for the new youth hub was finalised earlier this year following a comprehensive engagement process that attracted contributions from more than 1200 people.<\/p>\n
The hub will feature an open plan area for socialising and group activities, a multi-purpose room suitable for creative activities such as music and art, a kitchen able to host cooking classes and an accessible bathroom.<\/p>\n
Set to open early next year, the City of Greater Geelong is working on a name for the hub following another round of community engagement.<\/p>\n
A shortlist of names will be presented to the city’s youth council advisory committee for consideration, with its preference to be included in a final report to the council later this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
