Because we love our Lara.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/08\/DSC02705_10511.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lara Labor MP Ella George.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am here to protect my children, to protect our community, the elderly \u2013 we\u2019ve got retirement villages all over Lara with the elderly living there with health conditions \u2013 and we\u2019re going to dump an incinerator in Lara, close to homes and schools? How dare they.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will come together in solidarity and fight as a community to say no. We are not having this in our town.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lara Labor MP Ella George said the incinerator was \u201cextremely concerning\u201d for Lara residents, many of whom have been fighting against the project since 2020, who fear for the safety of the homes surrounding the facility as well as the effects on air quality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is incredibly important to note that the closest home is only 350 metres away from this project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/08\/DSC02721_10508.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Polwarth Liberal MP Richard Riordan said Geelong was more than a place to dump Melbourne&#8217;s rubbish.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe centre of the town of Lara, right here where we are today, is just over a kilometre away and there are thousands of homes in the nearby suburbs of Lara and Corio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms George also shared a statement of support from Deputy Prime Minister and Corio Labor federal member Richard Marles, who was unable to attend the protest in person.<\/p>\n<p>Victorian Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson said the waste-to-energy plant would not happen on her watch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only way to stop this incinerator given there is now a license issued by the EPA, without even an Environmental Effects Statement, is to send a message to Jacinta Allan that the seat of Lara will be lost at the next state election unless this government starts to listen to your community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_101362\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101362\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-101362\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/08\/DSC02695-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/08\/DSC02695-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/08\/DSC02695-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/08\/DSC02695-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/08\/DSC02695-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/08\/DSC02695-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2024\/08\/DSC02695-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-101362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Victorian Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Greens Member for Western Victoria Sarah Mansfield said she had not witnessed this level of community opposition, bringing together the business community and environmental advocates with politicians \u201cright across the political spectrum\u201d, to a project before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that waste incineration is an absolutely disaster on a whole lot of fronts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s terrible for the climate and for the environment.
