GEELONG University Hospital’s new children’s emergency department is now complete, with the capacity to meet the region’s growing demand.<\/p>\n
The $20 million state-of-the-art facility will deliver more specialised paediatric emergency care to families across Geelong, the Bellarine and Surf Coast.<\/p>\n
As part of one of Victoria’s busiest hospitals, the department was specifically designed to be a dedicated calming space.<\/p>\n
The new department now includes 28 treatment areas, two fast-track and eight short-stay beds with support spaces and a separate paediatric triage system.<\/p>\n
A dedicated entry for families with children requiring emergency care is open every day between 1pm to 9pm.<\/p>\n
Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas said the project was critical for children and families across Geelong.<\/p>\n
“It will help to meet growing demand in the region, while ensuring care is delivered in a friendly environment for kids.”<\/p>\n
As part of the projects final stage, new clinical areas were completed along with a reconstructed main drop off point for the emergency department.<\/p>\n
“This dedicated children’s emergency department ensures the kids in our region get the care they need, when they need it,” Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant said.<\/p>\n
At the peak of its construction, the build generated around 60 jobs and was delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Barwon Health and Kane Constructions.<\/p>\n
Construction began in May 2023, with the completed project part of the Victorian government’s investment in specially designed children’s emergency areas.<\/p>\n
The project builds on the more than $500 million invested into the 2022\/23 Victorian Budget for the Barwon Women’s and Children’s Hospital, which will be integrated into the existing University Hospital.<\/p>\n
The new facility will provide more birthing suites, additional special care nursery costs, extra maternity inpatient beds and more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
